It affects every area of our lives. They are indeed many. As you read this, bear in mind that all these maladies are stated as curses that do not belong to the redeemed people of God. The pestilence clings to you verse 21 ; consumption, fever and inflammation verse 22 ; boils, hemorrhoids, scab, and itch verse 27 ; blindness verse 28 ; boils from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head verse Many of us as Christians are enduring curses when we should be enjoying blessings.
Please read verse 59 of Deuteronomy 28 and check to see whether you are living in the curses or the blessings. The prophet Isaiah gives us a very vivid picture of the results of disobedience and rebellion. Speaking to the nation of Israel, he compares their condition resulting from disobedience to that of a completely sick body:. This passage is a metaphorical picture of the results of disobedience. However, one day as I was reading it, the Holy Spirit showed me something wonderful and beautiful.
I realized that Jesus had already taken all the curses upon Himself because He became our substitute. Those verses were not just a metaphorical picture of the condition of Israel as a result of their disobedience.
They were also a literal picture of Jesus as He hung on the cross. Jesus was beaten with a Roman scourge, with its fearful nine thongs. His head was injured: the thorns had been pressed down upon His head. His whole heart was afflicted. I believe Jesus died of a broken heart.
This passage is an exact description of Jesus as He hung upon the cross. Why did He do it? To redeem us from the curse by being made a curse for us. All those physical curses resulting from our disobedience against God came upon Jesus as He hung there on the cross. Thus, the question of what impact the fields of prophetic research and Israelite history can and should have on one another unites the articles.
The book's individual parts, however, are contributions of historians and prophetic scholars who enter the discussion from their own perspectives and examine the possibilities and problems of the intersection of these two topics. The articles from historians will focus on questions about the usefulness of prophetic texts for reconstructing Israel's history, and will also branch out and address topics such as the social location of the prophets and the benefits of other ancient texts, as well as archaeology, to understanding the prophets.
Scholars coming from the prophetic "side" will offer different perspectives on prophetic identity, experience, and rhetoric, and their possible correlations with historical contexts. These articles will engage broad issues such as how history may form the "context of prophets' thought" to quote contributor J. How do we make sense of God's apparently changing character in the Bible theologically? God is not obvious - unlike all the animate and inanimate objects which we can see around us.
God does not appear to fulfill any useful purpose; what is God for or about? Is God just a mystery? Or a problem? Or both? In Who On Earth is God? He is the reason you can be blessed to be a blessing. Put your trust in His presence in your life and what His finished work has accomplished for you!
