Also can i use VSS in any way to create backup in windows xp? Wednesday, July 25, AM. Hello, I believe the following article can fully explain your question: A bit of black magic: How to assign drive letters to VSS shadow copies The automatic check which was also logged did not have any error messages, either.

There are no NTFS volumes on my machine. File system is FAT Are my previous backups okay? How can I get rid of the error message? Hi again, Adi, in my message just sent, my answer assumed that, by "Application event log", you mean the log that NTBackup creates. I hope that's correct. You were right about the VSS error. I've in the meantime discovered the event viewer and the event log and am pasting an excerpt of the VSS error at the end of this message for information purposes.

As I don't have any NTFS volumes, does this mean that my previous system state backups are defective? The event log states that the backup as well as the backup check was successfully completed. I'm concerned that the system state backup went through the motions correctly but that there still may be a content problem. This info would help me in deciding about what backup strategy is the best in the future.

Namely: - Can I continue making system state backups as before and just ignore the error return? Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Es sind mindestens MB freier Speicherplatz pro Volumesicherung bzw. My translation of the "Beschreibung"-content: Volume shadow copy service error: comparison areas for creating shadow copies could not be found. Add to the system at least 1 NTFS-drive with enough storage space.

I am using a third party backup software. But just to test, I disabled VSS and ran a backup and all goes well. But on enabling the VSS system just reboots. Same thing happens when I use windows ntbackup on this XP machine with vss enabled and in manual.
